Crisis of Confidence

Jimmy Carter is often seen as a failed president, in part due to his inability to embrace the concept of American Exceptionalism that his successor Ronald Reagan campaigned so effectively with. Looking beyond the success (or lack-there-of) of his political career, imagine how different the world would be if he had been given the time to put to action the words of this speech. He worked with Habitat for Humanity and received the Nobel Peace Prize, but could have been an even greater force for change in a regulatory position. It’s a very inspiring speech while at the same time being incredibly sobering that so many years later we are still facing the same problems, and lacking governmental action to solve them. Failed presidency or not, the messages in this speech are as important as ever.
